Causes of drug-induced liver injury in India

The question: Does natural mean safe?

Study type
Observational study
Participants
1,288
Population
1288 patients with drug-induced liver injury across Indian centres, 2013 to 2018
Duration
Prospective registry
Published
Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, 2021

What was measured

Causes and outcomes of drug-induced liver injury.

What was found

Anti-tuberculosis medicines were the leading cause (46.4 per cent). Complementary and alternative medicines, including herbal products, were second at 13.9 per cent.

Limitations

Drawn from referral centres, so it describes the causes of recognised cases rather than the risk for an individual product.

What it means

Herbal products are medicines in their own right. Quality, dose and medical guidance matter as much for them as for any other treatment.
