Kidneys

How the kidneys work, kidney stones and the tests that check kidney health.

The kidneys remove wastes and extra fluid from the blood, balance salts and acids and help control blood pressure. Hot climates and low fluid intake make urine more concentrated, which raises the risk of kidney stones.

How it works

How it works

Each kidney contains about a million filtering units called nephrons. They filter the blood, reclaim what the body needs and send the rest to the bladder as urine. When urine is concentrated, minerals such as calcium oxalate can form crystals that grow into stones.

What strains it

  • Not drinking enough water, especially in heat
  • High salt intake
  • Diabetes and high blood pressure, the leading causes of kidney disease
  • Overuse of some painkillers
  • Repeated urinary infections

Habits that protect it

  • Drink enough to keep urine pale, more in summer
  • Reduce salt and packaged foods
  • Keep blood pressure and blood sugar in range
  • Do not hold urine for long periods
  • Take painkillers only as advised

See a doctor if you notice

  • Severe pain in the side or back that comes in waves
  • Blood in the urine
  • Burning with fever
  • Swelling of the face or feet
